FAQs

Q: I am participating in a SDCRID-sponsored workshop. Do I need to fill out paperwork to receive CEUs?

A. Yes! At the event, please sign the Activity Report form, provide your RID membership number, and indicate if you would like to receive CMP/ACET credit. SDCRID will automatically process your CEUs (this can take up to 60 days).

Q: I would like to host a workshop and am looking for an RID-approved sponsor. Can you approve my workshop for CEUs?

A: Yes! You can contact ceu@sdcrid.org and work with us to complete all required paperwork. Please do so at least 45 days prior to your planned event. We will support you to get ready for the workshop and will process your participants' CEUs. For non-SDCRID member, there is a $50 charge for each activity, independent of the number of participants.

Q: Are there other ways to earn CEUs?

A: Many organizations offer online CEU opportunities. They usually process their own CEUs and costs vary. You can also pursue Independent Studies (IS). Find an IS sponsor through RID's searchable sponsor database at https://myaccount.rid.org/Public/Search/Sponsor.aspx

Be aware that it takes time to go through the IS process with a sponsor - don’t wait until the last minute!

Q: What kinds of activities are not eligible for CEUs?

A: You cannot earn CEUs for the following: interpreting, activities required by employer or part of routine employment responsibilities, meals, socials or entertainment, or activities that were attended but NOT pre-approved by an RID Approved Sponsor. If you would like to receive credit for academic coursework at an accredited college or university or would like to attend a non-RID sponsored workshop or conference for CEU credit, please contact ceu@sdcrid.org PRIOR to the event to get approval.

Q: Where can I check if my college is CHEA approved?

A: You can check the CHEA website and confirm that the institution where you are taking for-credit classes is approved. If you are uncertain, please contact your educational institution for guidance.

Q: What kinds of activities are covered by a PINRA?

A: Participant Initiated Non-RID Activities (PINRA) include activities that an interpreter wishes to attend but which are not offered by an RID approved sponsor. The activity must be sponsored by an organization with specific known standards and must have a specific format, educational objectives and purpose. Some examples include:

• Audited college courses
• Non-credit courses at an educational institution
• Corporate trainings
• Community education
• Non-mandatory school district in-services
• Organizational conventions/workshops

Q: How many CEUs are required to maintain my RID certification?

Within your 4-year cycle you need a total of 80 hours (8.0 units). At least 60 hours (6.0 units) must be Professional Studies, and up to 20 hours (2.0 units) can be General Studies CEUs. Additionally, at least 10 hours (1.0 units) of your 80 hours must meet the requirements of Power, Privilege, and Oppression (PPO) specialty CEUs. Your CMP sponsor will help you distinguish PS vs. GS and how many CEUs you can earn at an event.

Q. How do I know if an event counts as Professional Studies (PS) or General Studies (GS)?

A: The determination of PS or GS is up to the CMP sponsor, following the guidelines in RID's Standards and Criteria. Sponsor-initiated activities will include PS or GS on their flyers. For PINRA or AC, the SDCRID CEU sponsor  will discuss the activity with you to determine whether it is CEU-worthy, which category the activity will fall into (PS or GS) and how many CEUs can be awarded for the activity.

Q: After the sponsor files my paperwork, when can I expect to see my CEU’s posted on my transcript?

A: It can take up to 60 days for CEUs to appear. If you don't see your CEUs then, please contact ceu@sdcrid.org for help. Please keep in mind that CMP coordinators are volunteers who works with you and RID. We will make every effort to make sure your CEUs are processed in a timely fashion!
