By its nature, ASL is a very visually descriptive language—more so than most spoken languages, which leads to many challenges when interpreting. In this workshop, we will explore how to express concepts visually using depicting verbs and classifier predicates, while maintaining the integrity of the original message during interpretation. Through guided practice, participants will learn strategies to enhance clarity and prevent unintentional shifts in meaning when moving between ASL and English.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1) Participants will be able to identify portions in spoken language text that are typically expressed visually in ASL.

2) Participants will be able to reproduce and construct concepts visually in ASL by using depicting and/or classifier predicates.

3) Participants will be able to take visually descriptive ASL and accurately produce equivalent messages into English.

Adam holds an associate’s degree in Interpreting from Pierce College, a bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies with a focus on ASL Literature from California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and a master’s degree in Linguistics from Gallaudet University. Prior to that, he spent nearly 20 years tutoring friends, family members, and classmates.
